One of the factors that influence the success of learning is a learning strategy. Observations of the PAI learning process showed that the students in the class lacked good activity and did not support the learning process such as talking to themselves
with friends. The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in student enthusiasm for learning in PAI lessons on Q.S. Al-Maidah (5): 90–91 and 32 as well as hadith related to the behavior of avoiding alcohol in class VIII.2 SMP Negeri 4 Balikpapan in the PAI learning process through the application of problem based learning (PBL) learning models. The type of research used in this research is classroom action research. The classroom action research model in this study basically uses a process model and consists of two cycles. Activities for each cycle of four stages, namely: planning, action, observation and reflection. Data collection techniques in this study used 4 techniques, namely observation techniques, interview techniques, documentation, and tests. Data analysis in this study was carried out both quantitatively and qualitatively.The problem based learning (PBL) learning model can increase student enthusiasm for learning in PAI subjects in class VIII.2 SMP Negeri 4 Balikpapan in the 2018/2019 school year, as evidenced by an increase in the percentage of student enthusiasm for learning in PAI lessons in Q.S. Al-Maidah (5): 90–91 and 32 as well as hadith related to the behavior of avoiding alcohol during learning, before the action of 20.58% (7 students) to 67.64% (23 students) in the first cycle, and in the first cycle II increased to 88.23% (30 students). So all performance indicators have been achieved and there is an increase in student enthusiasm for learning.
