The problem in this study is the lack of attention of students in learning in class and there are still many student learning outcomes that do not reach the Completeness of Teaching and Learning (KBM) of Islamic Religious Education subjects with a score of 75. So the formulation of the problem is whether the application of the discussion method can improve the learning outcomes of class VII students. 2 at SMP Negeri 2 Balikpapan on the subject of Islamic Religious Education, especially the material: Empathy is Easy to Respect is Beautiful.
This research is to improve the learning outcomes of Islamic Religious Education for students, as well as to find out the ability to manage teachers in the learning process through a discussion method for class VII.2 students at SMP Negeri 2 Balikpapan. This research is a class action research (PTK) carried out in two cycles, where each cycle consists of: planning, implementing actions, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were class VII.2 students at SMP Negeri 2 Balikpapan which totaled 33 students, consisting of 10 male students and 23 female students. Based on the results of observations in class VII.2 at SMP Negeri 2 Balikpapan, it was revealed that the learning methods applied by teachers in the form of discussions can improve student learning outcomes. The results of the study conducted by researchers for 3 months began on Monday, January 14, 2019, until Saturday, March 30, 2019. Teacher activity achieved in the first cycle averaged a score of 3. 4 (good criteria) with a total score of 44 out of a maximum score of 52 so that the percentage obtained is 8 4.61 % . The results of observations in the second cycle obtained an average teacher activity score of 3.6 (excellent criteria) with the calculation of the number of scores of 47 from a maximum score of 52 so that the percentage amount achieved was 9 0.38%. while the activity of students averaged a score of 3.3 (good criteria) with the calculation of the number of 30 scores from a maximum score of 40 so that the percentage obtained was 82.07%. next on Cycle II obtained the activity of the participants with an average score of 3.6 (excellent criteria) with the calculation of the number of scores of 36 from a maximum score of 40 so that the percentage amount is 90%. It is clearly seen in the implementation of the actions of cycle I to cycle II, the average value of learning outcomes in cycle I with the percentage of classical learning completion of 78.8% and classical absorption of 78.93% to increase in the implementation of cycle II with the acquisition of a percentage on classical learning completion of 93.94% and a percentage on classical absorption of 89.4%.
